Despacito was first released by Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi in the year 2017 and was the number one streamed track in just 6 months. The song is a blend of reggaeton and pop music not only brought renewed interest in reggaeton but also brought attention towards Latin music more generally. The Billboard Top 100 featured two songs that were Spanish predominantly, as well as four in 2016. The Despacito album reached its peak popularity in 2017, 19 songs mainly composed in Spanish reached the top 100. It climbed to 41 by 2020. Justin Bieber remixed Despacito 2017 with a version in two languages. Soon, other artists collaborated with Reggaeton stars like Drake and Bad Bunny with MIA (2018), Madonna and Maluma with Medellin 2019. A few performers of reggaeton lamented the trend towards popular music by 2020. However, a brand new group, Rauw Alejandro was determined to keep the growth and evolution of reggaeton. It often blended elements from electronic dance music as well as other styles.
